Reading – We love to read!
Reading is at the very heart of our school, St. Ambrose. We aim to make sure that all of our children become confident and happy readers, with a real love for books. We do this as a whole school community, working in partnership with our parents, libraries, parishioners and other local schools.
To teach phonics we use Read Write Inc. – a reading programme designed for four to seven-year-old children learning to read and write.
Read Write Inc. is delivered for 20 – 40 minutes a day in Reception and 30 minutes a day in Year 1 and above. It is proven to develop:
- Fluent, enthusiastic readers
- Deep comprehension of texts
- Confident speakers
- Keen writers
For further information see your child’s class teacher or follow this link: Read Write Inc.
Becoming Fluent Readers
Through KS1 and KS2 children progress and become fluent readers. At St Ambrose we use Oxford Reading Tree as our core reading scheme. We have chosen this Reading Scheme so that:
- Our children are more motivated to read and enjoy reading
- Our children develop the skills they need
- Our children learn to read with independence and understanding
- We raise levels of achievement in reading

All children have access to the school library to read for pleasure and to research for school projects. Books from the Reading scheme and the library are taken home and parents are encouraged to foster a the love of books by taking an active role in the their child’s reading development.
