PSHE education is a subject through which pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepare for life and work in modern Britain. Evidence shows that effective and well-delivered PSHE programmes have an impact on both academic and non-academic outcomes for pupils, particularly the most vulnerable and disadvantaged.
At St Ambrose we use the Jigsaw PSHE approach, this is a mindful approach to PSHE. This means that Jigsaw teaches children to become aware of their thoughts and feelings throughout the programme, relating this to the PSHE subject matter being studied. The Calm Me time at the beginning of each Piece (lesson) develops mindfulness using breathing techniques, awareness exercises and visualisations, tried and tested activities which are enjoyable for children
and teachers alike.
Jigsaw is structured into 6 half-termly Puzzles (units) with the whole school studying the same Puzzle at the same time. The Puzzles are sequential and developmental from September to July. These units are:
· Being Me
· Celebrating Differences
· Dreams and Goals
· Healthy Me
Each child has a Jigsaw Journal where we store all their learning activities. Our displays around the school enable us to share our achievements and successes.
